My policy on Halloween candy is “Ohmygod, just eat it now so I don’t have to hear you whine about it.” In that spirit, the day after Halloween, my boys’ treat buckets were getting pretty low. So low, in fact, that they began pelting each other with candy they didn’t like.
So I asked them to put all the candy they didn’t like in a pile and then we divvied it all up according to who liked what. We were left with a pretty hefty pile of unloved candy, and much to my surprise, it consisted almost entirely of Snickers.
What the hell? Where have I gone wrong? There has been no other moment in my entire career as a parent when I have so seriously questioned my ability to be a good role model and shaper of young minds.
Behold the horror.

I’m so sorry you had to look at that.
We thought it would be a good idea for the boys to watch some of the Presidential debate, but now I’m not so sure. They walked in right as Obama was saying this:
Parents are going to have to show more responsibility. They’ve got to turn off the TV set, put away the video games, and, finally, start instilling that thirst for knowledge that our students need.
Barack Obama, October 15, 2008.
My 5 year old, Ed, heard this and declared he was going to vote for “the other guy” because “Obama said no screen time forever.”
Harsh.
I would love one day to be able to walk into my own bathroom and not be greeted by the sight of my childrens’ poop in the toilet. That is all.
Last Monday night, Craig and I did something unusual.

We went out on a weeknight! My wonderful mom stayed with the kids and Craig and I got to see David Byrne in concert in San Francisco at Davies Symphony Hall. It was pretty much like the blown-out image above and so much fun!
You might remember that when I first heard he was touring I kind of went apeshit and immediately bought tickets. Craig was lukewarm on the idea, but I dragged him along anyway. (Who else was going to keep me from running up onto the stage?)
It was an amazing concert, and I got further confirmation that I married well because Craig didn’t mind that I danced the entire time and couldn’t wipe the goofy grin off my face. I defy anyone to not have a good time in the face of such happy music. Hell, he even played my favorite song from “My Life in the Bush of Ghosts” called “Help Me Somebody.” (The youtube video just has the audio accompanied by some artwork from the album cover.) I never expected to hear that song live, so yay me!
The show ended with a marching band and “Burning Down the House” natch, but they had already played “Crosseyed and Painless” which is one of my favorite songs of all songs in the world.
If you like David Byrne or Talking Heads I really recommend you go to this show. Craig liked it so much he was trying to convince me to look into flying to other shows on the tour!
