How do you make your own peanut butter?

images3.jpgEvery time I make a peanut butter sandwich for my kids I marvel at how expensive PB is. We buy the natural kind that is just ground-up nuts with salt, and I’m sure I could do it myself if I had the right equipment.

Does anyone out there make their own peanut butter on a regular basis? How do you do it? Fancy nut mill? Cuisinart? Is it cheaper than buying it in the store?

Lots of questions, I know. But I have an inquiring mind — and I’m cheap. Help me out, please!!

I dont make homemade peanut butter .. but maybe I should. It would be a delightful experience to teach my PB loving 13 yo son! However, I did find this and have had great luck in recipes I have tried at this site. If you cannot access the site for whatever reason please email me and I can copy/paste it to you. It’s very simple though…

i make peanut butter and almond butter at home fairly often, and it’s really easy.

nuts + oil (optional) +food processor = nut butter!

for almond butter, i dont add oil but i find a tiny bit in peanut butter is usually needed. Also, for peanut butter, i like to add a bit of cinnamon and brown sugar to it, and then stir in raisins after for Cinnamon Raisin peanut butter.

It takes a few minutes to make, and once the nuts are all ground up there’s a period where it seems like nothing is happening and that you’ve just got really finely ground up nuts, but right when you think that it DEFINITELY isn’t working, it will start to smooth out as the nuts begin to release their natural oils.

    Good luck!

In the US it’s probably about the same, but here (in Taipei, and I suspect in many parts of Asia) peanut butter is not as common, so it’s a lot more expensive than just buying the peanuts and making it yourself. I can’t wait to get a blender and try this :)
