Mike is ready for kindergarten, but unfortunately it doesn’t start until August. For months he’s been doing letters and words everywhere. He wants to know how things work. He loves the more school-like activities at his preschool. He’s ready.
Well… Except for one thing. He refuses to admit that the alphabet contains the letter N. He begrudgingly agrees that his name (real name, not blog name) has an ‘N’ in it, but that’s as far as he’ll go.
I just hope — for everyone’s sake — that he doesn’t get some meek young thing in their first year of teaching. Because, wow, whoever he gets has their work cut out for them. (Gee, I wonder where he gets this stubborn-streak?)

Hrmmm…I know a 30 year old who, for the last 25 years was convinced that the alphabet went lnmop…
When I was small, I used to “stubbornly” write the capital E as “3″ and vice versa. And Mum had a hell of a time telling me it was the other way round! :)
When my oldest first learned her alphabet, she was obsessed with the letter H, wrote it on everything. Never figured that one out. ;)
My friend’s son spelled his name Jakb for the longest time. When you would ask him about it, he would say, “I don’t like the ‘o’.”
Sounds like your oldest is more than ready for school.
Mason can count to 50 (he goes to kindergarten in the fall too), but refuses to put 16 in it’s proper place and instead says it between 35 and 36. Every time.
Mason can read, but writing, not so much. Your son’s writing is great. Very nice fine motor skills.

That’s so funny! Mine thinks the alphabet goes ABCDEFGHIJK… Elmo…P, and so on.
Ha!!! Well, at least he’s comfortable with the other letters!
How precious that picture is. My son is on a similar page as yours…he’s ready. Words/letters are making sense to him. Although, a few short months ago, he was obsessed with the idea that his name had a Y in it. (it most certainly doesn’t) We think it is because his friend Larry obviously has a Y in his name…and he wanted to be like Larry.
Such a neat time in childhood. Things are coming together, their view is expanding, they’re becoming “big” kids. And we’re trying desperately to hold on….

She only counts “1,2,3,4, 7….uh-huh.”
That’s hilarious! My friend has a 4.5 year old who knows how to read but insists that she doesn’t. My friend keeps finding her engrossed in a book, asks her what she is doing, and she insists that she is looking at the pictures. Except that there are no pictures on the page and Dianne can see her dragging her finger along the words as she reads. Kids crack me up.
My 9YO was the same when he was just starting – he would recite the alphabet …KLM.OPQ… never a N. I think it was the alphabet songs fault because itspeeds up arond this mark. And of course Seasame Street and other US made shows say Zee on the end instead of Zed , so we needed to explain that as well.
