I have that same sister but for some reason don't feel as loving, compassionate or understanding about her "disease". You see my mother did the same thing. My sister has been like this for the past 20 years and has been in recovery....so she knows there's a better way. She is now taking pain pills for what pain I'm not sure, just found our she's smoking crack with her new husband (3rd one), taking methadone which I was found in my sofa cushions. She tried to blame my husband for that one and thank God I found the methadone before my 2 year daughter did. Oh by the way, her children no longer live with her since she made the choice to stay with her new husband. One lives with her grandmother and the other with her father. So you see I don't really have a sister and her daughters don't really have a mother. Sorry but I'm not feeling the love.

Beautiful post.

And I'm so sorry of all you are going though.

I'd love to write an anonymous guest post. How do you get to do that?

My husband runs a methadone program in his pharmacy in our town. He sees all kinds of patients, and has said that many of them are otherwise upstanding citizens (some are even police officers) who somehow became addicted to their prescription pain killers, and are thus now on methadone.

I don't know how her pharmacy does it, but it may be possible for her to get carries (take enough doses home in a locked box for a few days at a time) if they allow that. That may help her with her commuting each morning and so on.

That really touched me. My brother is a recovering alcoholic. My parents staged an intervention the day after I can home from the hospital after delivering my son. The last three years have been a roller coaster while we watched him battle with sobriety. Sometimes he won, sometimes he didn't.

My brother is what they term a "Functional Addict" just like your sister. He never missed a day of work. Never missed paying his rent. When he called to tell me, I was completely shocked. I hadn't even seen my brother drink more than a glass of wine. He kept his secret for a dozen years before seeking recovery.

Being a family member of an addict is tough. If you haven't already, you should really go to an Al-Anon meeting (your parents too). As a member of her support group, you need to do your own recovery too.

The sibling of an addict. I know that role well. Your post is quite a testament to your love for your sister. Addiction is ugly, ugly, ugly and NO ONE ever aspires to it.
