The other day Mike realized that he could read. He’s not sitting down devouring books just yet, but soon enough.
He’s known for a long time that letters make sounds, you put letters together to make words, and so on. In fact, his favorite DVDs are The Electric Company and all those Leap Frog shows.
But last week he kind of “got it” more than he had before. He was copying some words like Cat, Dog, Ant and so on, and then he suddenly said, “Hey, I have a book with these words in it!” and ran off.
He came back with Cat Traps and started reading it to Mr. Plain. It was really cool, and he is SO going to love Kindergarten!
As I type this, he and Robbie are spelling up a storm in the kitchen. They already had one of those Word Whammer toys, but a few weeks ago I was scouring the sale toys at Amazon (for my stash of birthday party gifts) and found a set of lowercase letters for it. The boys love them! And it is great timing too, because it is all of a sudden a rainy day today. Whose brilliant idea was that, by the way?
