What to do about Legos?

We have reached a milstone in the Plain House. I do belive we are past the dire Choking Hazzard stage. Chip will be 2 in December, and while I’m not going to be foolhardy, I’m pretty sure that I can relax more about the all the teeny tiny things in our house.

For example, Mike and Robbie have this amazing Brio toolbox that has small plastic screws and other chokable pieces. I’ve always been on the alert for Chip with this toy. I haven’t wanted to put it away because the big boys love it so much, but it has always made me nervous.

But now I’m thinking Legos for Christmas! IMO, they are the holy grail of choking hazzards, but I think we’re ready.

But help me!

Here’s my question, though, how do you all deal with the millions of tiny pieces? It would be easiest to just get a huge box and dump them in there, but then how would the kids find anything? And when they wanted to play with them, they’d just dump the whole box onto the floor. And what about those kits where you make something specific? Don’t you want to keep the pieces for those separate?

    Giant bins…

Lego and Playmobile can be the bain of your existance…

I can not tell you hawmany times I have stepped on pieces and curse… MY HUSBAND! AND MY DAUGHTER…

Make certain the box is long and can fit under the bed….and can be pulled out on a moments notice!

The woman who babysat my son when I worked away from home used to keep the legos in a big bin. But, instead of just the bin, she had a bedsheet, too. Why am I having a hard time explaining this?

The sheet went on the floor, legos on the sheet. When the kids were done, the sheet was folded up with the legos inside, and the whole thing went back in the big bin.

    It worked really well.

Yes, big long bin that can fit under bed and if you end up like us, you might need four before it’s all said and done. We had a few kits we tried to keep together, but oldest son didn’t like to follow the rules so we just kept the booklets that show the directions and let him throw them all in willy nilly and this made him happy.

I did not think about the sheet thing and that would solve my nightly, pick these up, pick these up, pick these up before I take them out to the trash bin routine.

Legos are the bomb even if they do get scattered all over. I can get a short nap now and then with them in my life.

    Teach the big kids heimlich?

I have no idea. Babyproofing has not happened with #3. How do you babyproof when his five year old brother is handing him screws and pennies?

What I tell him is, since he crashed this party, he is here at his own risk.

My son got into legos when my daughter was still little. The rule was that they had to stay in his room, and if I found them out of his room, they would find there way to the trash. We used to have them nicely organized in little bins that had lids for each set. But it has finally deteriorated to one massive bin that my son has to dig through. I was a little worried about him finding the pieces he needs in that mess, but what I have found is that his creations are now more creative….for whatever that’s worth!

Good luck. Enjoy the baby lego stage, you know when you can still find cheaper sets that your child hasn’t gotten. I’ve this year graduated to the $100-$200 set requests. Have Legos always been this expensive? If so, I have a new respect for my parents.;)

Those are all great ideas! Unfortunately the kids have those beds with drawers underneath.

The bedsheet idea has a certain appeal, but it conflicts with my meean-mom tendencies. I want them to be able to clean it up themselves. I wonder if they’d be able to handle it. What do you all think?
