You may have noticed the sa-weet new ticker in my sidebar.

Lest you think I am touting this fact about my age in shame or regret, please understand that it couldn’t be further from the truth. I love getting older.

I know who I am more every year, and I care less about pandering to others. I feel better able to help people who ten years ago I would have thought of as “the competition,” and I don’t let the bastards get me down. As often.

So view my sidebar and do the countdown with me. I will be 40 on September 17th, 2007 and I am damned proud of it.

Oh 40….I remember mine like it was yesterday…well actually it was a year and a half ago…haha Unlike you I was not too keen on the idea. My friends hung a banner across a popular building “LORDY LORDY EMILY’S 40″……it was cute, but at the time I wanted to cry. I thank God for my husband. He got me lingerie from a online site (pamperedpassions.com) and a card that said “You’ve never looked better” and I felt 20 again. It was a really special birthday now that I look back on it…I am almost kinda excited for 50….maybe not…

You go girl. I’ll be 38 in August and I’m looking forward to kicking 40’s ASS.

I LOVE this post, Erika! It’s so true, loving getting older is somthing you can’t explain to a twenty year old. I love my thirties so much more than my twenties. I’m sure the forties will be even better.

This line? “I feel better able to help people who ten years ago I would have thought of as “the competition,” and I don’t let the bastards get me down. As often.”

    I luff.

I feel the same way. I have never wigged out about a milestone birthday or getting older. i used to lie about my age at work — saying I was older than I really was. I was 27 for about three years and lost of track of how old I actually was more times than I can count. I’ll be 35 next week and I can’t wait! And I really couldn’t wait to turn 30… As my grandpa said, Getting older’s not so bad, especially when you consider the alternative! :-)

Hey, my birthday is September 18th!

  6. […] She will be 40 in 46 days and she also inspired me to start linking out to people more. I love her daily GRIT posts (Go Read It Today) and have found many a good blogs because of it. […]

Oh, I hear ya! I have a few shorts years to go (3? two and a half?) The ADD- it’s getting worse…) and I’m looking forward to 40. I keep hearing how women in their forties are FABULOUS and I want my fabulosity, darnit.

Besides, the thirties have sucked bigged ones.

  8. nap warden Avatar

I am 39 and trying to embrace turning 40…Thanks for the inspiration!

Congrats, you’ll be just seven years shy of Sub-Saharan Africa’s life expectancy. Uh, that was supposed to be a lot more light-hearted. Obviously Jeffrey Sachs’ The End of Poverty is getting to me.

  10. Melina Avatar

YOU ROCK GIRL YOU LOOK FANTASTIC I never would’ve thought you were turning 40 (though isn’t that the new 20?)

You know I am the same way. Age is just a number and each year I get older I like who I am more and more. Don’t get me wrong the boobs sag, and the butt gets bigger but that’s okay its all good.

When I turned 30 Melissa actually called me and asked if anything had fallen off, I’m like umm no???

Plus for me each year is a milestone I say TAKE THAT CANCER that’s another year you said I wouldn’t see. Now if I could figure out a way to just bend down without making a noise I’ll be all set. Umph!!!

I’ll be 39 in 49 days. I am already planning the big bash for my 40th. Happy early birthday to ya.

  12. stephanie Avatar

I’m 39 in 22 days! Birthdays are fun…*sigh* Funny you mention your 40th – I just wrote a post skirting this aging thing the other day when Mr. Whipple turned 91. Essentially, I’m keeping my eyes on that prize and trying not to be one of those pathetic women who handwrings about being 40something. You help (love your style); maybe I’ll do that countdown thing too…

  13. MamaLee Avatar

I turned 40 last year, and it really didn’t bother me. I think having 3 little rugrats helps keep me young!

    Happy almost birthday!

  14. Nicole/wksocmom Avatar

You go. I tend to forget my birthday and age, which I think is my coping mechanism. Think yours is much better :) You do look awesome!

  15. Believer in Balance Avatar

I too care less about what others think the older I get. It’s so liberating! Now I don’t stop singing when I sit at a red light. Let ’em stare!

  16. jen Avatar

You’re nearly one whole year younger than me and almost a Libran like me. I had a blast at my 40th and it occasionally freaks me out that I’m no longer in my 30s but too bad. Are you having a party?

PS: I’m the same Jen and my website has the same name, I just have a different URL.

  17. Jazz Avatar

40? Wha… I would never have put you past 35! You are beautiful! Megawatt smile, devilish smirk… :)

  18. motherbumper Avatar

DAMN – awesome :) – I just turned 38 and I’m damn proud. I’m looking forward to 40 because if it’s half as good as 30, I’m in for a fun time. I wish you the same and it totally rocks that you are counting it down. Whoot whoot!

  19. Suburban Oblivion Avatar

Wow, I am 28 and thought you were my age!! I hope I look so good at 40! :D

  20. Daisy Avatar

I found 30 much harder than 40. By 40, I was much more content with myself. Now when 50 hits — let’s not even think about it.

WooHoo! Way to go! Now if I can just pull on the same attitude when I’m turning 40, I’ll be in great shape!!!! Actually, for me, I think 40 might be better than “late thirties.”

Will you have a big online bash so we can sing you happy birthday? Maybe in Second Life!!!

  22. Janice Avatar

YOU GO GIRL! I’m 45 and I don’t care who knows it. I’ve been told I look 30 or so(true or not I LOVE the ago boost). You celebrate youself and all these years you’ve survived and thrived!!

  23. BirdieRoark Avatar

It think it is totally awesome that you are blasting your age to the blogosphere.

Since we practically live in the same city, I’m thinking that you need birthday party that involves a swanky bar and a nice cocktail. Let me know if you are interested. I know that I can easily talk Nicole into coming – just say the words “pear martini” and she’s in.

  24. Damselfly Avatar

    Wha…? You can’t possibly be 40.

But I agree, getting closer to that age myself, it’s easier to be myself than I was a decade ago.

  25. Jen M. Avatar

Oh my gosh, you’re almost exactly the same age as my dear husband. I love your post. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. This year, we should all resolve to be more comfortable in our skins – when it’s my turn to be 40, I’m doing the ticker, too!!

  26. Sonia Avatar

My 30s have been far better than my 20s were. Getting older ain’t so bad, but ask me again when I’m comparing my 80s and 90s, I may bitch about it then.

  27. moosh in indy. Avatar

You are WAY to hot to be anywhere near 40, but you’re even hotter being okay with being 40.

As far as the treadmill is concerned, I blame it on the thigh jiggle mixed with the endorphins.

  28. Redneck Mommy Avatar

You so do not look anywhere near 40. I hope I look half as good as you in another nine years when my big 40 is up.

    You hottie you.

  29. Jonathon Morgan Avatar

Congrats on nearing 40 — everyone says it’s the new 30. I, on the other hand, am just trying to make it to the first 30 without any major catastrophies. ;)

  30. Wendy Avatar

Yay, another 40 year old Virgo! :)

I’ll be 40 in May and quite looking forward to it. You go girl! LOL

(I am so proud of you for being proud of reaching 40, btw — that really rocks!)

  34. little miss Avatar

What a great post. It’s true, the older I get the less the “competition” bothers me. I am truly becoming ME and enjoying every minute of it.

btw, I am now officially 29 FOREVER.

We’re all “40 Year Old Virgins” come September! Tee hee :)

I used 40 as an excuse to get Lasik and I am so happy with it. Younger gals should use 30 as an excuse to do it!
