Working at Home
Yes, it cramps my style a little bit, but it is certainly better than when he’s standing next to me mad and yelling: “Mommy, you poopy!” “I’m not going to be your best friend.” “I don’t like you mommy! You a rock!” How in the world is all this coming from a kid who is…

Grrr, Toddler Mad
To continue on the Chip theme, the other day he got mad because I wouldn’t let him close the cabinet lock in the bathroom. I thought the matter was settled. A minute later Chip walks over to me. Looks me right in the eye. And says “I open it” and stomps away. Note: that isn’t…

I didn't sign up for this particular "new attitude"
Chip will be three in December and in preparation he has decided to try out being, well, kind of a jerk. I’m not saying he is a jerk, I’m just noting that this is a persona he’s trying on. At random moments throughout the day he will stomp up to me and announce in his…

Come on listen to a story 'bout a boy named Chip.
I let Chip choose dinner a couple of nights ago, and of course he chose chicken nuggets. Fine with me — nuke ’em and stick ’em on a plate… that’s damn fine parenting. But of course, he wanted them RIGHTNOWRIGHTNOWRIGHTNOW. Because he was HUNRY MOMMY! But you know what? Gourmet dinosaur chicken nuggets from Costco…

Toddler with Sharpie vs. household items. Spoiler: armed toddlers always win.
On Saturday morning we had some guys over to do some work on our driveway. Mr. Plain and I were talking to them in the front yard while the boys were hanging out watching TV. I peeked in a few times, saw no fighting and no crying and went back outside. Later I was inside…

Is this a sign of things to come? Third child rules the house with cunning and charm? And attitude?
I was sitting down the other day talking to Chip. (OK, I was on the toilet.) And when I got up he said “No Mommy, sit down!” I said “Why?” And he said “Ee-cause I tell you!” Yikes.

Hello 2-year-old, let me explain the long-term benefits, so then, of course, you'll agree to go along. What?
We’re back at the ‘eye patching’ part of the program to treat Chip’s eye. After his cataract surgery he got to have some time off to heal and rest, but now we have to get back on the patching train. Trade offs, trade offs. It’s all about balance. He has some amblyopia (“lazy eye”) and…

The Toddler Manifesto. Even if I find it annoying to live with, it is nice to see him sticking up for himself. (And I heart hyphens.)
This morning I politely told Chip to stop poking every button on the TiVO. Silly me, I should have known better. His response was accompanied by a dismissive hand-gesture, a pissed-off foot-stomp, a chimp-like chest-thump, and the use of his awesome self-given nickname. “NO MOMMY, I CHEDDA!” My mistake. I must have missed that memo.

The joy of the younger child
Chip has learned many things from his older brothers. He’s not even 2 yet and he’s working on counting, knows some of the ABCs, and lots of colors (still claims that all animals say “Moo” however, so don’t worry I’m not signing him up for some Gifted Program :). Mike and Robbie’s strongest curse word…

Yes, it's another post about Chip, because he's a sweet toddler, not an insane four year old
I took Chip to the eye doctor today for another check of his cataract. (More details on this and his daily eye patching in a previous post. We’re up to an hour a day now.) We were in the waiting room and Chip decided to check out the mags. [photo removed] Yeah, he’s cute. But…

How to (eye) Patch a Grabby Toddler
My 18 month old needs to wear an eye patch for 30 minutes a day. He’s been doing this since he was a couple of days old, and when he turned 1 he discovered that it was really easy to remove the patch. He also decided that the patches were delicious! So then followed a…
