Here’s a J.C. Penny picture of me on another visit to the grandparents house. My grandmother loved to get me a new dress, curl my hair, loan me her jewelry, and take me for a fancy portrait. There’s nothing like a doting grandmother when you’re an only child — I didn’t have to share her!
I still remember the soapy smell of the Dippity Doo as it dried. I would sit under my grandmother’s huge hair dryer reading magazines until the curls were set. She would gently brush them out and then we’d race over to Pennys before my straight hair rejected the curl.
I wasn’t a particularly girly-girl, but I enjoyed doing this kind of thing with my grandmother. Oh, and she also would make me the BEST fudge ever in the whole universe! And apricot pie. And slice after slice of perfectly ripe cantaloupe.
