Ten years ago today I was 29 years old and getting my hair done for my wedding. Our wedding was really just an excuse to have a fancy evening party, and we had it in San Francisco at a place that is named after its address: 1409 Sutter. A gorgeous and dark Victorian house that is now used for events, and it was the perfect spot.
We had about 90 guests, dinner, and a band and it was a wonderful night. That night we stayed in a fancy hotel and ordered pizza at 2am because — of course — we didn’t get to eat any of the party food we had so carefully selected.
The next morning as we were leaving for the airport to take us to Hawaii we noticed that they were filming an episode of Nash Bridges outside the hotel. The hilarity of getting running into the totally HOT Philip Michael Thomas on my first day being married was enough to send me into sleep-deprived giggles.
Our honeymoon on Kauai was so quiet and restful. The perfect antidote for the craziness leading up to the wedding, and we spent quite a bit of time reading in hammocks and watching the ocean.
Then.
I never could have imagined how our lives are now. This is not at all how I thought it would turn out.
After 5 years and tens of thousands of dollars trying to have kids, we had a bumper crop in 2002. We adopted Mike in February the week we found out I was pregnant with Robbie. They’re 8 months apart — how could I have guessed that part of my future? In 2004 I got to stay pregnant again (Chip!) and our family was complete.
This morning I was holding Chip in the kitchen when Mr. Plain woke up. He kissed me and told me happy anniversary. Mike and Robbie were in the other room watching Lazy Town. Our house was quiet for once and as I stood there with my youngest only in a diaper I thought about how this was not the future I had envisioned.
It is so much better than anything my imagination could come up with, and I am grateful for every second of it.
